# Graphology for Beginners. The size of handwriting

The size of handwriting is one of the most important characteristics, as it’s a constant quality and usually doesn’t change with time. It can tell us about the self-esteem of a person, his self-awareness, and the place he gives to himself in life.

From the vertical perspective, handwriting is divided into three zones — lower, middle and upper. A middle zone is present in all letters. It is a basis of a letter. The lower and upper parts of the letters are «tails» that go beyond the line (for example, letters b, d, y etc.).

Therefore, there are two sizes of handwriting — the size of the middle zone (a relative size) and the size of all three zones as a whole (an absolute size). There are writings with different sizes of letters, so during the handwiritng analysis, this trait is also taken into account.

A relative size of the handwriting that’s equal to 3 mm is a norm, anything that is larger is considered a large handwriting, and anything smaller is a small handwriting.
A large handwriting can mean a high self-esteem, a small size of handwriting means a low self-esteem. Moreover, the size of handwriting shows the space a person wants to take over with his activity.

For example, a person that actively takes part in public affairs, will most probably have a large handwriting. In combination with other signs, a large absolute size of letters shows open-mindness of the author, who looks at things as a whole without going into details. He cannot think strategically.

A small middle size shows the opposite — a detailed view on surrounding things or events. This person is able to see a problem in all details, he is rather a tactician than a strategist.

A large middle size in combination with very short lower and upper zones shows some sort of immaturity. This person is not mature enough, there are unanswered questions that stop him from growing, he is dependent and weak. This kind of writing is usually typical of teenagers.

Another typical characteristics for teenagers (and their handwriting) is inconsistency. An author of the irregular size of the middle zone is still in the process of searching for his inner self, has not found the place under the sun, is jumping from one thing to another, is easily carried away and quits hobbies.
